History

Advanced HPC-AI Research and Development Support Center was established on October 1st, 2025. The Center was selected through the review process for the Next-Generation HPC-AI Development Support Program (call for proposals issued in July 2025) by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The proposal was submitted with the Research Organization for Information Science and Technology (RIST) as the representative institution and University of Tsukuba, the University of Tokyo, and Institute of Science Tokyo, as the three core institutions. HAIRDESC is an organizational unit within RIST, promoting its activities in close collaboration with the three core institutions. The project period runs through March 2030. Following the official review procedure by MEXT, HAIRDESC was established as a new center under the leadership of the President of RIST. This time-limited project, spanning four years and six months, aims to support and promote research in high performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI), with a particular focus on GPU-based technologies. HAIRDESC is located in the KIMEC Center Building on Kobe Port Island, Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture, and carries out its activities in cooperation with the RIST Kobe Center, which is separately established and operated within the same building.
